REDSUNSET

As the sun slowly sets on one horizon and rises on another, it paints a magnificent picture that spans regions and cultures. From the banks of the Seine in France to the shores of the Thames in England, from Andalusia in Spain to the Pampas of Argentina, from the vast plains of Russia to the tropical islands of Indonesia, this Year of the Dragon witnesses the gathering of global artists. Their unique perspectives and styles collectively create vivid and vibrant depictions of the Chinese red sunset — a lively global mosaic of art.

Alex Kuznetsov-Smith

Alex Kuznetsov-Smith (b.1978) is an abstract artist based in Lisbon, Portugal.Originally from Minsk, Belarus. His early interest in painting was influenced byhis family ties to Vitebsk, known for its rich artistic history. After a career in graphic design, he discovered spray paint in 1997 and delved into street artand graffiti, adopting various nicknames and gaining recognition across post-Soviet territories and Europe.

In 2010, a visit to a Hong Kong gallery and a significant life event shifted hisfocus to Abstract Expressionism. Kuznetsov's art is characterized by bold swipes of color, exploring the transformative power of color through different mediums like paintings, works on paper, and prints. His works often suggest urban imagery but prioritize the material and medium as subjects. Influenced by Gerhard Richter, Barnett Newman, and Pierre Soulages, he uses giant aluminum rulers and a process-led approach to create his abstract pieces.

Kuznetsov sees painting as a quest for perfection and a reflection of his desire to organize the world harmoniously. His works aim to connect with viewers on a profound level, molding his fantasies into new truths. He has collaborated with notable publications, brands, and institutions like Vogue, AD Magazine, Absolut, Tumi, Adidas, Nike, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. His solo exhibitions have been held in venues like Mirus Gallery in San Francisco, Speerstra Gallery in Switzerland and France, Montana Gallery Barcelona, and the National Center for Contemporary Arts of the Republic of Belarus. His work is showcased and collected globally, including in New York, San Francisco, London, Seoul, Hong Kong, Brussels, Geneva, Paris, Monaco, Moscow, Minsk, and Barcelona.

Amy Dury

Amy Dury studied BA Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art (1993–97) and an MA Fine Art at University of Brighton(2000–02).

She works in oil and acrylic paint, alongside drawing and mixed media. Recent notable events include appearing on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year ’21, and accepted for the 2021 Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. In March 2021 she conducted a livestream portrait painting session for the Tate Instagram. She was chosen to respond to Edvard Munch print for Society of Scottish Artists 22/23 Annual Show. In December 2022 she was  a guest interviewee on John Daltons art podcast.

As a painter, Amy extracts figures from photographs from the pre-digital age as a starting point. These can be found family photographs or home movies. Watching these personal films , she instinctively stops them on frames that resonate. These images often relate topeoples roles in society, the hierarchies and dynamics of power. There is a strong idea of colour to begin, using both oil and acrylic paint. Her background as a printmaker informs her use of layers and structure, yet she allows the process to move and evolve the work as it is constructed.

Gemma Solà Sotos

Gemma Solà Sotos (b.1993, Barcelona, Spain). She studied between 2014 and 2018 at the University of Barcelona to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. In 2018 she moved to Munich, Germany, to continue her education at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, in the class of Gregor Hildebrandt. She graduated in February 2024 and currently lives and works between Vienna, Munich and Barcelona.

In her work, the canvas becomes a space for revision and exploration of a variety of topics of the contemporary subject, connecting it with a specific space and its symbols. Reality and fiction, the natural and the artificial, the representation of the self or the irruption of thoughts or state of mind through social media are part of the themes in which Solà is interested, reviewing them with sometimes humor, irony, or a heavy seriousness.
Without starting from a pre-established idea and using acrylic, airbrush, oil pastel and cheerful colors with a naive style, painting becomes a medium that conveys what is perceived from both physical and virtual reality. The pictorial elements and how they act as emotional triggers of memories play a major role. Through abstraction and a new interaction on the canvas, they lose their original context and open up a new narrative.

Herru Yoga

Herru Yoga(b. 1989, Batusangkar, Indonesia),Herru Yoga pursued his passion and dedication for the arts through an unconventional route. Unlike his peers, he decided to leave the Indonesian Institute of Art, Yogyakarta, in 2008 to pursue French literature, graduating from Département de la Langue Français in 2014. His love for literature and culture, in turn, nourishes the contextual depth of his artworks. Yoga juxtaposes two historical painting techniques: the Baroque era’s mastery of chiaroscuro and the gestural handling of paint indebted to Abstract Expressionism. Yoga’s narrative works tend to raise the theme of history, humanity, current issues, identities and world figures, while at the same time attempt to build the epic and colossal energy missing from many contemporary art oeuvres

Marie Boyer

Marie Boyer (b. 1988, Toulouse, France). From childhood, the artist was interested in painting, which she discovered through the works of Kusama, Turner and Monet. The pleasure of color and texture led her to painting in her early teens, where, initiated by her aunt, she painted herfirst pictures. This practice soon became a vocation: the artist devoted herself tostudying applied arts and had the opportunity to paint in Cape Town, Cologne and Lisbon as part of artistic residencies.

The depiction of dreamlike, nebulous landscapes, sculpted by nuances of colorand light, became her preferred genre. Shapes dissolve in the tremor of ephemeral.unreal atmospheric effects. Fraaments of aerial views are presented to the viewer as an invitation to enter thebeyond, offering a moment of calm and solitude. The artist has imagined a poetic universe around the sun, which for her symbolizeslife, renewal and hope. For the artist, the sunset is a therapy accessible to all, diffusing vital energy and acertain gratitude for being alive.
