PLACID. HONGKONG

The work of Placid, an artist duo of sculptor and painter, started in 2019 with the creation of imaginary characters named placid beings. Personalities that remain calm and rational in their sculptural forms, but have their rich sensibilities revealed through paintings of their inner faces.

Contemplating on topics of peace, distance, plasticity and understanding, Placid explore using fluid formal expressions. Paintings by Placid are done through unusual lenses, accentuating the changes in perception created by shifts in viewpoint or optical distortions. Despite their dynamic nature, they convey an atmosphere of peaceful equilibrium.

Chen Lok Yan (sculptor) and Louise Chow (painter) were born in 1989 in Hong Kong, and received their Masters of Architecture (MArch) from the University of Hong Kong (HKU). With years of experience as architects in Hong Kong before they start making art, the artist duo portray characters on a thin line between them being a living person and a sculptural object. Their works display the contrast and connection between the way they see and think.
